MATHEMATICS
Focus of SCCS Middle School Mathematics
Mathematics reflects order and unity as seen in God’s universe; therefore, it plays an integral role in the Catholic school. At SCCS Middle School, we approach mathematics with an understanding that it is a part of a person’s daily life. More than just skills to be memorized and mastered, mathematics includes problem solving, reasoning, and communicating. All students need and deserve an opportunity to become mathematically powerful.
Mathematics is the science of numbers and spatial form. The discipline of mathematics includes the understanding, measurement, and interpretation of quantitative and spatial relationships, as well as mathematical computation.
Our goals for SCCS Middle School graduates:
1. Learn to value mathematics;
2. Become confidant in your mathematical ability;
3. Become mathematical problem solvers;
4. Learn to communicate mathematically; and
5. Learn to reason mathematically.
To varying degrees, all people use mathematics throughout their lifetimes. The SCCS Middle School mathematics program provides our students with the basis for further exploration in the sciences. Likewise, the students develop essential, lifelong skills that will allow them to function well in an increasingly complex society.
