In addition, we have class prayer services. The prayers that Grade One students should know are: Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Angel of God, Meal Prayers

SPELLING AND HANDWRITING
In GRADE ONE SPELLING  and HANDWRITING we follow the Zaner-Bloser books entitled Spelling Connections and Handwriting. We also follow the Daily Oral Language. 

We find these connections in every unit:

  • Sounds and letters (consonants and vowels) and rhyming.
  • Unit spelling tests: short vowel words, long vowel words plus double o (oo), consonant cluster words, adding _s to words, adding _ing to words.
  • Final consonants within words: ck, th, sh sounds.
  • Print spelling words in word families ( an) etc.
  • Track letters in alphabetical order.
  • Print spelling words to complete sentences.
  • Use spelling words to write stories.
  • Do journal writing.

In Handwriting, which is also Zaner-Bloser, we teach:

  • The correct formation of lowercase and uppercase letters and numbers.
  • Print words and put words into sentences.
  • Print sentences and stories in our journals.
  • Zaner - Bloser Alphabet (print a sample sheet)

Daily Oral Langauge* concentrates on:

  • Handwriting skills
  • Doing Daily Oral Language (correcting words when writing a sentence.)
  • Writing sentences in correct format, capitalization of the first word, ending sentences with a period or questions mark.

*We begin the Daily Oral Language after Christmas. 

GRAMMAR

  • A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought.
  • Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
  • Writing statements, question, and exclamations

  • Nouns, Proper Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives within sentences

SCIENCE

In GRADE ONE SCIENCE we study the following:

  • Mammals - Mammals are animals that are covered with heair (fur) and usually move about on two or four legs and are born live.
  • Birds - Birds are animals that have two legs, wings and a body covering of feathers.
  • Fish - Fish are animals that live in water and have gills for breathing.
  • Insects - Insects are animals with three body parts, usually 2 - 4 winds and six legs.
  • Plants in the Garden - We identify roots, stems and leaves. We also classify plants.
  • Think Earth - This is an environmental program.
  • Energy Unit - Smoking and your body

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • Where we live: Maps, Neighborhoods, Communities, State, Country
  • We belong: Families, People together, Getting along, Voting
  • People at Work: Jobs, Needs and wants, Money, Graphs, Shelter, Service
  • Our World: Natural resources, Weather, Seasons
