FOURTH GRADE FOCUS
Biweekly Newsletter
November 20, 2008

RELIGION
The students are working on Saint reports. These reports are due December 2.

This week Father Miller visited the students. Father came to each of the classrooms where the children had the opportunity to get to know more about him.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Information is coming home today about the relief map project. The project will be due December 15. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Buck.

This is Geography Awareness Week. During social studies class the students worked on mapping major languages and endangered species of the Americas. In computer class the students worked on a website at www.iknowthat.com. Mrs. Donlon recommends checking it out for some fun geography activities.

MATH
All three math classes will have a test before we send another newsletter. Please watch your child's planner for an exact date.

ADVENT CONCERT REMINDERS:
For the Advent concerts this year students are to dress in black pants/skirt and a white shirt so the students will feel unified as musicians performing as part of a group. Because we have spent 2 months of music class working on concert music, attendance at the Advent Concert is a requirement for a student's music grade. Please mark these dates on your calendars: The Kindergarten and 1st grade Advent Concert 'Ringing Joy for Baby Jesus' is Friday December 5th at 2:00pm and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Advent Concert 'Hear the Angel Voices' is Thursday December 11th at 7:00pm. The students have been working very hard on their music and are very excited to share their singing with the SCCS community!

Thank you. -Ms. May

FIELD TRIP
The permission slip and information about our field trip on December 18, was sent home on Tuesday. Please return the slip and money at your earliest convenience. We have many parents interested in chaperoning. When all slips are returned we will draw names and let those of you who were interested know the outcome on December 1. Thank you for your enthusiastic response!

NEWS FROM 4TH GRADE ESPAÑOL
Spanish class is buzzing, quite literally – just no “bee” sounds, but rather, Spanish being spoken. The fourth graders began their year with learning to use a Spanish translation dictionary; the activities segued nicely into the weather unit. Students speak about the daily type of weather during their classes – perhaps your child may be the Spanish-speaking meteorologist at home! J

As the children learn the seasons, months, and days of the week, they will be conversing and writing Spanish sentences to develop an awareness of structural patterns in the language.

Currently, the students are completing two-minute timings with up-to-date flashcards; in other words, the timings include ALL vocabulary that is introduced during the fourth grade year. I encourage everyone to practice the flashcards daily for ten minutes. For each timing, the goal is to identify at least one more vocabulary word than the previous timing; the timings will usually be completed on Thursdays (4B) and Fridays (4McD & 4SMF).

END OF TRIMESTER
The first trimester ends on Tuesday, November 25. Report cards will be sent home December 12.

REMINDERS

Please continue to check planners daily. If you see the word "Late" written in green ink ask your child about the work and help him/her get it completed and ready to be turned in the following day.

• Oh, the weather outside is frightful…so remember to send hats and mittens and maybe an SCCS sweatshirt to wear inside when the rooms are a bit coolerJ Please label everything.

We wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving - filled with the blessings of family and friends.
